Recently my amiga, Xenia from RaisedbyCulture, invited me to attend Macy’s Celebrates Asian Pacific American Heritage Month at one of my favorite local malls South Coast Plaza!
If there is one thing I stand for is celebration of diversity! I was excited to see Macy’s celebrate APAHM because like many other cultures and heritages the celebrations are few. Knowing that many were going to come together to celebrate their heritage made me happy and I wanted to be there.
I not only got to know more about the celebration at the event but I really learned more about a SoCal natives group you may have heard of them they go by Far East Movement!!!!!!!!!!!!
The guys were awesome they sat for a quick Q&A and here is that they had to say!
When it comes to their group they themselves are culturally diverse. Kev Nish is Japanese/Chinese, DJ Virman is Filipino, Proh and J-Splif are Korean American.
They say being raised in LA has influenced their music because of the diversity in the area.
Their advice to upcoming artist “stay positive and move forward”
When asked if they see themselves as pioneers for Asian American Music they said they see themselves more like students
They continued to say how much they love to give back to their hometowns and how involved they are in their communities. I love groups that are successful and still find the time to come back and represent their humble beginnings.
Here are a few videos from their performance that day. Their energy was really amazing!
I also loved that they brought on stage an upcoming artist by the name of Ginette Claudette
Thank you Far East Movement and Macy’s for an amazing experience to learn more about the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration!
If you are in Chicago area 5/30 will be their last performance for APAHM celebration visit Macy’s for more information on the APAHM celebration including more on Far East Movement.
