One of the many things we wanted our children to be was BILINGUAL.
When little man was born we knew who would be our nanny and there was a big reason why. We asked my aunt, who only spoke spanish, to care for our son. It was very important to us for them to learn spanish. My husband had the hardest time communicating with the nanny. I would occasionaly get calls at work because they needed to tell eachother something. It was quite a task to translate back and forth to them what they each said.
Little man definitely started understanding what was being said to him. He especially loved hearing spanish lullabyes. Unfortunatley that ended all too soon. I was forced to quit my job when my son was just 9 months. No more spanish speaking nanny… no more spanish speaking at all.
Recently I expressed to my husband that I wanted little man and little lady to learn spanish. He was more than thrilled and fully supportive. I was stumpedon how. I can only speak spanish for so long before i’m back at speaking english with my husband. Gosh, how I wish he spoke or at least understood some spanish. I’ve tried teaching him too but it’s a little harder as we get older.
Just when I thought it may be too late I find the light. A great site called SPANGLISH BABY has so many ideas and encoragement for parents like me.
I’ve decided to watch at least 2 spanish shows with the kids everyday. I will also have them listen to some spanish lullabyes like we use to. some are as easy as what little man already knows like itsy bitsy spider, pat-a-cake, ect. I’m also gonna make my way to the bookstore and pick up some books to add to the library.
I’m so excited that our children will perhaps be bilingual maybe some of it will rub off on dad too.
