I still remember the first time I understood what “el mundial” was. It was 1994 and the cup was in the USA! My dad being the soccer fanatic he is was raving about the soccer events that were about to take place.
1994- celebrating Easter and the largest soccer event with my cousins and brothers |
Now that I have kids of my own I try to share stories of my childhood. I told them today how Mexico was playing soccer and shared how my dad, papuchoni, enjoy games. I can still close my eyes and hear my dad screaming GOALLLL for his team Though I never sat and truly enjoyed the games like he does, it’s always fascinating to hear him enjoy them.
I wanted to celebrate this grand soccer event with the kids and get them a little excited even if we didn’t watch the whole game.
We baked cakes and decorated them as we live streamed the Mexico vs Croatia off Univision in true Papuchoni fashion. Listening to it in Spanish only made the memories that much more real.
Here is how we made our soccer cakes!
Bake 2 small round cakes and 1 9in round cake
You don’t need Wilton tips but they do help to add great decor to your cakes. We used red frosting and green frosting. Also we used decorating gel according to our teams- Mexico and Brazil.
Frost the 9in round cake all green. Add a line in the middle with a circle and 2 half squares for the soccer field
Make soccer details and then begin to add your grass you can skip this part but it really brings the cake to life. Wilton tip 233 for the grass
Mexico Cake
Frost all white or with buttercream like we did, Add green one side with a decorative tip and red on the other with another decorative tip. Using the Decorative gels make the eagle on the cactus branch eating the serpent…. Get as creative as you’d like we opted for a simple look 😉
Again frost with all green, and make a diamond using gel sparkle in gold. Fill with a blue decorate gel half circles fill the center with the white sparkle and fill the rest of your diamond with the gold. using a toothpick put a little of the white sparkle and dot it in to the blue gel. It really is fun to make these cakes so take your time!
Add soccer wrapped candy chocolates or any other soccer decorations. We suggest legos or soccer figures!
Make this cake rock with Flags!
Thanks to Activity Village who has great printable we were able to use the flags printable for easy decor on our cake too. Just download the printable here at Activity Village and stick toothpicks on to the back of each cut out flag. Secure with a tape.
The kids had fun placing the finish touches onto the cake. The flags looked amazing!
Here is our finished cakes! We can’t wait for Mexico to play Brazil on the 17th!
The kids loved asking about the flags and the game. We are so excited Mexico won today!!!
