If it’s one thing about living in the greater Philadelphia area that I’m proud about it’s definitely the food! The flavors are amazing and I think it’s one of the few things that remind me of home. Quick street food really is comfort food for me. So when I tried my first Philly Cheesesteak I was hooked. I started making my own simple versions at home. We eat them often and since I like to explore my kitchen I decided to put the family favorites in one. We love waffles, we love grilled cheese and well you heard my love for Philly Cheesesteaks put these together for the most amazing bite!
Make a Philly Cheesesteak Grilled Cheese
The best Grilled cheese sandwiches growing up were made on Wonder Bread and with Kraft Cheese! While my mom usually made them with yellow american Kraft Singles, I like white american Kraft Singles now! So I went over to Walmart to pick up all my ingredients from the fresh veggies to the chip steak to my Wonder Bread and Kraft singles!
Philly cheesesteaks are always loaded with peppers and onions and of coursed chipped steak! I like mine chopped but feel free to cook yours the way you like it! What I love about Philly cheesesteaks is that the steak cooks fast and the veggies don’t take much time either.
- 4 slices- Wonder Bread
- 4 Kraft Singles While American Cheese
- Blue Bonnet Spread
- 1/2 green pepper -sliced
- 1/2 yellow onion -sliced
- 2 chipped steaks
- Cook your chipped steak then onions and green pepper
- Add spread to one side of all slices of bread
- Place slice of bread butter side down on your waffle iron
- Add one slice of cheese on bread
- Top with meat and onions and peppers
- Add a slice of cheese on top
- Place slice of bread butter side up
- close waffle iron slowly to ensure the bread and filling isn't moved
- cook for about 3-5mins or until you see bread is a nice golden color (waffle iron heat varies)
- This grilled cheese sandwich can be made in either a round or squared waffle iron.
I like to have everything at my reach when making my grilled cheese especially when using the waffle iron. The steak and onions and peppers cook fast and gives you just enough time to butter your bread. Multitasking is key! Be sure to only butter one side of your bread. I use Blue Bonnet spread because it glides on smooth. Also when grilling your onions and peppers use a little oil and salt and pepper to taste.
Once your waffle iron is ready it’s hot we need to move fast when layering all the ingredients!
My waffle iron is squared and allows me to make more than one at a time. But this can be done in a round waffle iron too.
Just be sure to layer fast starting with bread butter side down, a slice of cheese, cooked steak and onions and veggies.
Top it with another slice of white american and slice of bread butter side up. Bring the waffle iron down slowly as it will move around if your toppings are a bit high. Gradually move the waffle iron down lower and lower.
TIP: No need to grease your waffle iron the butter helps keep your waffle iron grilled cheese non stick!
