Bilingual Friday: Don’t Say That | No Digas Eso

March 21, 2014 Leave a Comment

When my kids aren’t behaving I speak more Spanish, especially during my lectures!  My kids know I am serious and not playing when the Spanish comes out. I use “Don’t say that” so much more than I should because Little Man has picked up “Cochina”

When I was a kid, I ate dirt and my Nana, grandmother, would ask me “Are you eating dirt? Don’t be a nasty girl, Cochina!”
While it is slang it is used often. I suddenly started using it one day to tell Little Lady to stop doing something nasty and ever since then Little Man has picked it up.

He will tease her and say “don’t be a cochina” When I first heard it I laughed to myself. When he said it again in public I wanted to die. While it’s not a bad word, it’s not a word i’d like him to call his sister especially out in public!

Little Man is a smart cookie He knows around dad he better not say the word but with me well he thinks it’s funny.

I’m working on getting him to stop saying it but honestly my heart gets a little happy when he uses it correctly!
