One of our families favorite desserts is ChocoFlan. It’s one of the few desserts everyone in our family enjoys. It has something for everyone chocolate cake and creamy flan. You can never go wrong with flan.

This holiday season I wanted to make our favorite with a little twist for the holidays. I headed to my local Walmart and found the Watkins brand of extracts in various flavors but I had to get peppermint! It just screams holiday season. I decided to make Peppermint Chocoflan and it was out of this world! So delicious!

To make your own Peppermint ChocoFlan and wow your family this holiday here is what you need:

Peppermint ChocoFlan_ ingredients
Ingredients
For the Peppermint Chocolate Cake Mix

  • 1- Chocolate Cake Mix
    • According to your cake mix: 3eggs, oil, and water
  • 1 tsp of Pure Peppermint Extract*

For the Flan

  • 1- 12oz can of Evaporated milk
  • 1- 14oz can of La Lechera Sweet Condensed Milk
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tbs of Vanilla Extract
Other Ingredients
  • Butter
  • 1 can of La Lecher Dulce de Leche

Let’s get started!

Directions:
1-In a saucepan filled half way, place your dulce de leche to get it warm and spreadable. This can take a while so it’s important to get it going first.

2- Make your cake mix. Incorporate the ingredients as the directions per your box mix. Once all is mixed add 1 tsp of Peppermint extract. (*You can add as much or as little Peppermint as you desire. I find 1tsp gives enough flavor.)

3-Make your flan. In the blender add your evaporated milk, sweet condensed milk, and eggs. Blend slowly no more than a minute at a time to prevent foaming. You want no foam!

I used 2 square dishes and divided the dulce de leche, cake mix, and flan in between both dishes to make 2 chocoflan cakes

4-Butter your pan lightly all around.
5-Remove your Dulce de leche from the heat and spread evenly.
6-Add your cake mix over the Dulce de leche.

7-Pour your flan mixture over the cake slowly. Leave at least an inch of room from the rim. Your cake will expand.

8-Cover tightly with aluminum foil. Place in another dish to cook in a Baine-Marie or in a water bath. You will need to fill up the dish you are placing your chocoflan in half way with water.

9-Cook in the oven between 60-90mins at 350. You will know it is ready once your cake is at the top and fully cooked.

Tip: Try not to check it constantly. If at 60mins it isn’t done give it another 30mins.

10-Remove from Oven and water bath. Let it cool for 30mins and then place in refrigerator for an additional 30 mins or longer.

Tip: Be sure to wait at least 30mins or it will fall apart completely. I didn’t learn from the first time I made my Chocoflan and had my flan fall apart in a mush.
