Mi Cultura Mexicana: Churro Strings

September 13, 2012 1 Comment

GUBlife mi cultura mexicana
Today we took on the kitchen to make a super delicious treat that actually brings so many memories to our recent visit to Tijuana, Mexico– CHURROS!

While searching online for a recipe I decided to make something a little bit different for the kiddos but with the same taste and feel CHURRO STRINGS!

We used this recipe here with just one change. We used Whole Wheat flour instead of Regular white flour they tasted just the same!

To make some Churro Strings here is what you will need:

1 cup water
2 Tbs brown sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/3 cup butter
1 cup Whole Wheat Flour
2 eggs
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 ground cinnamon

Let’s get started!

1-Take the butter, water, brown sugar, and salt and place in a pot.
2-It should look something like this. Cut up the butter so that it melts faster.
3-Fill a frying pan with at least 1 1/2 inches of oil. I kept it at Med-High heat
4-Bring the the butter mixture to a boil then turn of heat.
5-Mix in the flour. Make sure to mix very well before proceeding to the next step.
6-Combine the eggs with the vanilla extract.
7-Mix in the egg mixture with the flour to start making the dough.
8-Mix very well until egg is completely combined It should look like this!

Let’s fry them up!

You can use a ziplock bag or a pastry bag with a good sized opened tip.
Be careful when filling your bag the dough still can be very hot.
I did what the directions called for and tested the oil. The goal is to have your churro float right to the top with NO SINKING.
Once you know the temp on the oil is good you can add up to 3 churro strings at a time. We made ours 4-6 inches long. Once you notice the golden brown coming up flip them over and after a few seconds they are ready to be removed.

Sugary coating!

Once you’ve removed the churros from the heat and placed them on paper towel lined cookie sheet. Mix the Cinnamon Sugar in a plate or bowl large enough to roll the churros in. Don’t wait to long before rolling them in the Cinnamon Sugar.

Listos!

This is one of the kids favorite treats! I am so happy we finally had the courage to make a batch of our own. It was not only simple but so delicious! We placed all our churros in a brown paper lunch bag to give us the feel of how we purchased them in Tijuana!
