As we approach Day of the Dead I wanted to create a special treat for the kids since I finally learned to use cookies cutters on actual cookies.

I made some cute Sugar Skull cookies and decorated them with vibrant colors. The kids love treats and my mission was to create some pretty memorable sweet treats for this Dia de los Muertos!

First I made a simple sugar cookie dough from a mix. I rolled it out and went to town with the skull shaped cookie cutters.

I actually stored the cookies over night in a plastic container until we were ready to decorate them with the kids. We used white frosting and lots of colorful decorating gel.

To get an even white base i piped my frosting and then gave a soft spread with a butter knife. If you prefer using royal icing I am sure this would work much better but the kids love the frosting from a tub that stays soft

Next we outlined our face and added 2 dots eyes, an upside down tiny heart for a nose and 4 small lines for the mouth. to get the sugar skull effect we used a butter knife to merge all the lines for a fancy mouth!

Next we decorated our eyes. We used 2 colors and 4 dots of each color. This creates a nice colorful flowered eye.

Then I let the kids go crazy with the dots. The more dots the better.
These cookies were delicious and so fun to make.
