Celebrating Las Posadas with Barbie #barbieproject

This year I introduced Little Lady to yet another tradition and celebration from our Mexican culture- Las Posadas. Las posadas take place December 16th thru the 24th Las posadas represent a reenactment of Mary and Joseph seeking shelter in Bethlehem. This is a huge tradition in our culture. Although, it’s celebrated in different ways now much is the same in that we celebrate life, enjoy each others company and feast!

In Mexico, crowds of neighbors parade down their town seeking posada which today is much like trick or treating mini parties. If a home has luminaries or their porch lights lit they are signaling the participation in posadas. You hear songs, cheers, and even receive treats at each house you stop by at. Others organize it and prepare a mini fiesta every night of las posadas to celebrate.

I wanted Little Lady to get a taste of the fun in our own playtime. So, Barbie, her friend Steve and Little Lady attended their first posada!

We made crafts: DIY luminaries and Cardboard houses for our pueblo (town)

Our pueblo was simple, just different shaped boxes wrapped in shipping paper and decorated with crayons.  We drew doors, windows and even added holiday decor like lights and wreaths!

We also added little details like a piñata which was just a mini ornament on a ribbon. We used a straw as our piñata stick and hung pretty metal rope as a wreath on a home.

For the luminaries we used shipping paper, scissors, tape and of course battery operated tea lights.

See the tutorial for these here in this video and see how little lady enjoyed her first posada!

Overall, learning about las posadas thru play not only teaches them something new but creates new memories. Little Lady was quick to reenact the posada by visiting each home and admiring the decor.

While I don’t have celebrations like those in Mexico or California available to my family here in NJ I am happy to find new ways to continue traditions and even make new ones of our own.

Las posadas, Noche Buena, and Christmas day are very important to my family so it’s only right we continue the celebrations!

What are some of the celebration you take part in for the holidays?

Wishing you felices fiestas! We hope you are surrounded with happiness and love!
